Time to take another alt from zero to hero(ine)! And time to update this popular blogpost on freebie shopping from last May. And this time, I beat my old record of 789 freebies in 10 stops! Yes, it can be done!!

This weekend, I wanted to see just how many high-quality freebies I could vacuum up in as few stops as possible, for a newbie (unisex) Second Life avatar. My only rule was to ignore any older system (non-mesh) clothing, any applier-based clothing, tattoos, classic avatar skins, shapes, and poses. My total budget was L$51, which was spent on full-body mesh avatars. Everything else was free!

My starting point was Altamura, where I picked up the free group gifts of the Juliet and Romeo mesh bodies, for only the L$50 group join fee for the Altamura Design/Mesh Avatars group! (More information here. You have to pay the vendors L$1 after you join the group, and your Linden dollar is automatically refunded.)

UPDATE Feb. 25th: It would appear that there was a miscommunication from Altamura about when this promotion would end. I was told Feb. 27th and I originally wrote that in this blogpost. However, today I learned from the Altamura Design/Mesh Avatars discussion group that it actually ended at the end of the day yesterday, February 24th. Sorry if you missed this fabulous offer!

However, you still have many free and inexpensive options for mesh heads and bodies for male avatars and for female avatars (follow these links for more details).

SECOND UPDATE Feb. 25th: Due to the number of unhappy customers who believed they had until Feb. 27th and still wanted to pick up the Romeo and Juliet group gifts, Altamura has posted the following notice to their group late this afternoon:

Due to a miscommunication, Romeo & Juliet gift was removed. It WILL be back tomorrow until the 27th as was originally expected. So make SURE to bring yourself and friends along before they’re gone!!

After I visited Altamura, I hit only six more locations in Second Life:

  • Virtue (group is free to join): 46 group gifts (beautiful, modestly-designed women’s dresses, blouses and T-shirts)
  • Coco Designs (group is free to join): 47 group gifts (women’s clothing and shoes; note there are two separate Group Gift walls in the store)
  • !Soul (group is free to join): 114 group gifts (women’s hair, clothing and shoes)
  • Hilly Haalan (group is free to join): 68 group gifts (women’s clothing and shoes)
  • The Free Dove (group is free to join): 198 group gifts (men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, hair and jewelry)
  • The freebie store at Ajuda SL Brasil (no group needed): a whopping 350 gifts (men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, hair and jewelry)

Second Life Steals, Deals, and Freebies: The Butterfly Queen

I was feeling rather depressed this evening (for reasons that I won’t get into), and to cheer myself up I decided to do a styling challenge on one of my Second Life alts (i.e. alternate avatars), a medieval minstrel named, appropriately enough, Scarborough Fair.

And when I saw this beautiful Marisol gown at La Bella Boutique, located on their Group Gift wall, I knew exactly how I was going to pull a look together. Joining the La Bella Boutique group was free, and the gown was also free! And it’s not just a gown. It also comes with six attachments of clusters of 3 or 4 butterflies each, all arrayed as if in flight around you!

It even comes with a HUD so you can change the colour of the gown to one of seven different shades, and all the butterfly attachments to one of seven matching colours as well. (There’s also a bouquet of roses that comes in six colours, but I left that out.) And… the best part is, if you click on each of the individual butterfly attachments, it will start to flap its tiny wings! The overall effect is quite magical.

And so, to match the gown with all the fluttering butterflies, I dug through my inventory and pulled out a very old hunt gift by Evie’s Closet from the 2012 Crazy Hair Hunt, where I had spent at least an hour painstakingly retexturing each individual hair prim from brown to blonde hair textures (because Scarborough Fair is a blonde). This hairstyle also comes with many tiny animated butterflies flying around amidst the flowers and even a couple of tiny landed butterfly attachments slowly fluttering their wings! Here’s a short video of the effect, which I think is quite lovely. Very Disney princess!

Unfortunately, the hairstyle is truly a one-of-a-kind item, and no longer available. But you can still pick up this lovely gown with the butterfly attachments for free, and style your own Butterfly Queen.

(All these pictures were taken on the Lost Unicorn sim in Second Life, which is well worth an explore. It’s gorgeous!)

Note that I first found out about this fabulous freebie from the Midnight Magpie blog, which is a good source for information on various freebies to be found in Second Life.

Second Life Steals, Deals, and Freebies: What a Little Moonlight Can Do

I don’t usually do this, but sometimes I feel like pulling together a look in Second Life and just taking a photo. And when you find an awesome freebie like this Franceline ballgown by Brii, you want to show it off!

This picture was taken at the Pino 1951 bar, which is all crushed red velvet, cigarette smoke, and spotlights for the strippers who are trying to make a buck while the rain is pouring outside in the alleyway. It’s a remarkably well-put-together evocation of a certain place and time in history. The music is all smooth jazz vocalists. You almost expect Frank Sinatra and the rest of the Rat Pack to stroll in and ask for a cocktail.

Here’s a view of this simply stunning gown from the back. It has materials enabled, and it really shimmers!

My avatar is wearing:

Mesh Head: the Altamura Leila head (free advent group gift which is no longer available; the group Altamura was L$50 to join, plus L$99 for the Omega relay; more information here)

Head Skin Applier: Omega fullbody skin applier, another free advent group gift from Altamura; again, this is no longer available; more information here

Mesh Body: the free Jenny mesh body by Altamura (a former Women Only Hunt gift; note that the Jenny Altamura mesh avatar body is also available at the Freebie Megastore at London City, however, you cannot remove the included head on that version as I did here)

Earrings: Perllina earrings by Lazuri (a free gift from a recent Christmas shopping event, no longer available)

Gown: gold Franceline ballgown by Brii (free gift at this SLURL; you must join the SL Frees & Offers group for free to get this group gift). This stunning gown with the golden sheen comes with earrings, bracelets and even a hair decoration! I decided to go with the Perllina earrings instead.

Hair: Aria by D!va (free group gift; group is free to join)

TOTAL COST FOR THIS AVATAR: L$149 (L$50 for the Altamura group join fee, plus L$99 for the Omega system kit for Altamura)

Second Life Steals, Deals and Freebies: Eight New Starter Avatars!

One place which is often overlooked by Second Life users looking for freebies is their default inventory. You don’t have to try to force your way into crowded stores or slap any lucky boards to get it; you already have it!

Linden Lab has recently released eight new starter avatars (you can preview them by selecting Choose an Avatar from the Avatar drop-down menu in the upper left hand corner of your Firestorm viewer):

Eight New Starter Avatars

Now, these starter avatars are classic system (non-mesh body) avatars, but the clothing is all modern mesh clothing. Here are a few pictures of the new outfits which are available, shown on mesh avatars:

Entire Outfit (Except Shoes) Including Hat with Hair, Bag with Dog, and iPad (from the Bitsy Starter Avatar)
Entire Outfit Including Manbun Hair (from the Ashton Starter Avatar)
Ballgown and Pearl Necklace (from the Gretchen Starter Avatar)
Tuxedo and Shoes (from the Leonard Starter Avatar)

One strange quirk of the starter avatars is that you do need to load them first in order to get the items into your inventory; then you can pick and choose what you want to use, or even mix and match between them.

So check out the Second Life starter avatars if you haven’t already done so. Load each of them up and take a good look at pieces of their wardrobe that you can reuse. Looking good doesn’t have to cost a fortune!
