From Her to ME: A Gender-Affirming Surgery Fundraiser in Second Life, Nov. 22nd to Dec. 22nd, 2021

A memorial to those transgender people we have lost this year, at the From Her To ME event

Metaverse platforms are natural homes to transmen, transwomen, the non-binary, and the gender fluid, where you have the ability to choose how you are seen by other avatars. Many trans people take the first steps of their journey in a virtual world.

But while virtual worlds can be a haven to the transgendered, they are not perfect, either. In November 2017, I wrote an extensive blogpost about how many virtual worlds and social VR platforms still tend to codify the male/female dichotomy as a hardset binary rather than a fluid concept. Still, many people who want to present as a different gender from the one they were assigned at birth seek out metaverse platforms where they can express themselves freely, without judgement or harassment, and where they can help build vibrant, diverse communities.

While I was in the Belle Epoque store in Second Life, doing their 6th anniversary hunt (see this blogpost for a view of some of the many lovely hunt gifts), I came across a poster on the wall which intrigued me, so I teleported over to the event titled From Her to ME, which opens Nov. 22nd, 2021 and runs until Dec. 22nd, 2021:

The From Her to ME event in Second Life s a fund-raiser for Danny, a transgender man who is getting top surgery (here’s his GoFundMe page; he wants to raise US$6,000 to reach his goal).

Up here in Canada, chest masculinization surgery is usually covered by our universal healthcare, but the overall situation could still use improvement, according to CTV News:

Transgender Canadians and advocates are calling on the federal government to implement comprehensive trans and gender-affirming healthcare coverage across the country…

As it stands, all provinces and territories offer various levels of care for transgender and non-binary individuals. But often barriers crop up within the first instance of trying to access that care, an issue advocates say is due to a lack of training, forcing trans and non-binary people to become experts in their own healthcare.

But, while the situation in Canada is far from perfect, it is still far better than in the United States, where thousands of transgender Americans like Danny have to pay out of pocket for often-expensive gender-affirming surgeries, and sometimes resort to opening crowdfunding pages on GoFundMe and similar services in an effort to raise the necessary funds.

Hence, the From Her To ME event in Second Life, where dozens of Second Life content creators are donating all or part of their sales towards the cause. Here, for example, Belle Epoque is selling two complete fatpacks of former gacha prizes, and donating 100% toward’s Danny’s GoFundMe campaign:

There are also special auctions, where the winning bidder gets a rare or even one-of-a-kind item, like this purple fantasy outfit from Belle Epoque, with the proceeds again going to Danny to help fund his top surgery (the auctions start when the event opens on November 22nd, 2021).

Here is your taxi to the From Her To Me event, which starts Nov. 22nd, 2021 and runs through to Dec, 22nd, 2021. Why not pay a visit (they’re already open early, although all the vendor booths are not set up yet), and see if anything strikes your fancy? Your Linden dollars will be going to a good cause!

UPDATED! Second Life Steals, Deals, and Freebies: The Top 21 Second Life Store Groups to Join and Stay a Member of, for the Best Free Group Gifts and Bargains!

PLEASE NOTE: My blog is still on indefinite hiatus; I have made a single exception for this blogpost. After this, I will be going back on my self-imposed break from blogging.

Have you joined the RyanSchultz.com Steals, Deals & Freebies group yet? I will be posting EVEN MORE news and tips on finding fabulous freebies and bargains in Second Life than I now post here on the blog! More information on this brand new SL group here.

Join the Scandalize store group for only L$20, and it will likely be the best twenty Linden dollars you have ever spent!

Today’s blogpost is in response to the often-asked question: What are the best Second Life store groups to join and stay a member of?

But before I answer that burning question, there are six freebie groups (i.e. they are not store groups) which you should already be following (source):

  1. Fabulously Free in SL: their group is free to join; here is a list of the gifts you can pick up with that group tag active
  2. Maitreya Gifts, Sales & News: their group is free to join; follow their blog to find out what gifts you can get with this group
  3. Mesh Avatar Appearance Maniacs (MAAM): it costs L$50 to join the MAAM group; here is a list of freebies you can pick up with that group tag active
  4. SL Frees & Offers: theirgroup is free to join; here’s their list of group gifts
  5. TeleportHub.com: it costs L$10 to join their group; here is a list of gifts you can get
  6. THIRD LIFE [Frees, Gifts & Hunts]: their group is free to join, although they have charged in the past; here is their blog

Now, on to the list of Second Life store groups which I do recommend you join, in rank order (with the most generous groups listed first). So, if you are short of group space, you can just work you way down the list until you run out of available group slots! As I mention below, some of these groups are free, so you could leave them after picking up all the steals, deals, and freebies!

I also strongly recommend that you always keep at least one free group slot available, so if you do have to join a group unexpectedly, you are prepared!

There are, of course, countless other freebie groups which you can join for free, just to pick up a free outfit, then leave immediately afterwards (e.g. Mesh Body Friends). Usually, there will be a sign in the store which you can click on, that will give you a link in local chat to join the group, next to a picture of the free item. (Remember to press Ctrl+H to pull up the local chat window so you can click on the link.)

Without further do, here is the list. Please note that I have given the EXACT spelling of the store group names below is given in bold at the start of each entry on this list, so if you are having trouble finding it, you might want to cut and paste that name into the Search box under Groups.

UPDATED! Second Life Steals, Deals, and Freebies: Bargains and Freebies for Female Avatars to Celebrate International Women’s Day

Have you joined the RyanSchultz.com Steals, Deals & Freebies group yet? I will be posting EVEN MORE news and tips on finding fabulous freebies and bargains in Second Life than I now post here on the blog! More information on this brand new SL group here.

International Women’s Day (Monday, March 8th, 2021) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. I did a bit of hunting around, but I could not find any information on what events are taking place within Second Life to mark the occasion, as Inara Pey reported on the festivities held last year (if you do know what’s going on, please let me know!).

However, I do know that, to mark International Women’s Day, a couple of well-known Second Life stores are offering special gifts.

First up is Belle Epoque, where if you join their store group for only L$10, you can pick up this spectacular long gown (sized for Maitreya Lara mesh bodies):

There are five other group gifts you can snap up at the same time, as well as group gifts for several well-known freebie groups, so it’s well worth your time to drop by.

Here’s a pro tip on how to wear a ballgown with such a voluminous skirt: use an animation override (AO) which does not move your legs around a lot. There’s a perfect, FREE one on the SL Marketplace, called Chubby Girl AO by an animations store called [ImpEle] that has long since left the grid. Don’t let the name put you off; it actually has arm poses that put a bit of room between your arms and torso, and many simple, non-convoluted stands—just perfect for this ballgown! Simply add a hands-only AO for your Bento hands (don’t pay for one; you can get one for free from any of the freebie Altamura bodies at the various freebie stores in Second Life, see here for a list of where to find them), and you’re all set!

To celebrate International Women’s Day, AMUI is offering a free L$250 gift card good for anything in the store if you join their group for L$25, which I think is a good deal! There are also a couple of group gifts you can pick up at the same time, including an attractive IWD-themed top; just pay each vendor L$1 and your Linden dollar will be automatically refunded.

Here’s a close-up view of the vendor panel for the International Women’s Day top gift from AMUI, which comes in no less than seventeen different sizes! No matter what brand of mesh avatar body you are rocking, you should be able to find a size that fits you!

Happy International Women’s Day! If I hear of other freebies or bargains, or of any in-world IWD celebrations, I will update this blogpost. If you do know of something that I haven’t mentioned here (either a deal or an event), please leave a comment, thank you!

UPDATE 6:13 p.m.: Scandalize has announced a one-day, 50%-off sale of everything in the store, plus a new group gift of a fatpack of the sexy Ayseha lingerie set. Thanks to moonbubble for finding this!

UPDATE 8:18 p.m.: Ivy Qissentell (I just love that avatar name!) has told me about a couplr of dollarbie items for International Women’s Day that I wanted to share with you.

Loco Como Tu Madre is selling a pink women’s top with a design of women from various countries and walks of life for only L$1, and KAZZA is selling this beautifully detailed floral bouquet for one Linden dollar:

This lovely, resizable pink-and-white bouquet comes with a hold pose, and it has no copy/modify/transfer permissions, so you can buy it and give it to the special woman in your life!

Thank you for your tips, Ivy!

UPDATE March 8th, 2021: Hilly Haalan, a store which has always been among the most generous on the Second Life grid for its large number of free group gifts, has a brand new gift out for International Women’s Day, this complete outfit, which includes the shoes and handbag!

Simply join the Hilly Haalan group for free and click the panel. While you’re here, be sure to visit their Freebie store nearby, to vacuum up literally dozens and dozens of group gifts!

The Hilly Haalan freebie store

And here’s one final free gift for International Women’s Day from 7 Deadly S[k]ins, which you can pick up from the front counter of the in-world store (no group needed):

This Monroe skin comes in the pineapple skin tone, is compatible with Genus Bento heads, and comes in both system/Bakes on Mesh and an Omega applier version. Pick it up quickly, before the end of March 8th!
