Second Life Steals, Deals, and Freebies: Look Like a Million Dollars Without Spending a Penny on Formal Wear!

I have been home sick from work with a cold these past several days, and sleeping most of the day (hence the relative lack of blogging this week). Sorry guys, I am feeling under the weather! I’ll be back soon, I promise!

One of my tips for Second Life freebie fashionistas is that many ballrooms and clubs with a formal dress code will often offer free outfits for both women and men, as a courtesy for newbies who might not yet have some fancier clothes in their inventories.

Ballrooms tend to come and go with alarming regularity in Second Life, so if you do hear about a place that is offering free outfits, you might want to visit it as soon as possible, and save it in your inventory for when you need it! You never know when they might come in handy, for a wedding or some other formal event…

And remember, if you ever need a fancy outfit in a hurry, and you don’t have time to go shopping, among the newest set of starter avatars are the Gretchen and Leonard avatars, with a perfectly good women’s strapless ballgown and pearls and a men’s tuxedo:

These outfits should work very well with a mesh avatar, using the alpha HUD that came with your body to alpha out the sections of your body that poke through. If course, if you have a classic, system avatar, all you need are the alphas that come with these outfits and you’re all set.

I’ve already mentioned the free men’s and women’s formalwear at the new, upstart Frank’s Jazz Club in this blogpost. Here’s a look at the free black ballgown for the women, which is simple, classic and elegant:

Another ballroom which I heard about for the first time today which offers free outfits for men and women is the ApoTHEOSes Ballroom (yes, that’s how it spelled!) which you can find at this SLURL. If you search for and join the ApoTHEOSes Ballroom group (or just click the JOIN GROUP sign), which costs you nothing, then you can click on the two signs right at the entrance to pick up some lovely formalwear:

This men’s tuxedo is different from the freebies I have picked up at other Second Life ballrooms, in that it actually comes with a HUD to change the colour of the vest and bowtie to one of 20 different colours, and includes a separate red or white boutonnière to finish the look:

Yes, the shoes are included, and they are quite nicely detailed (they don’t show up well in this photo). Both the shoes and the tuxedo come in sizes to fit most popular male mesh bodies, such as Jake Belleza and Signature Gianni, and several other mesh bodies. This is a wardrobe staple for male avatars that you absolutely should not pass up!

The women’s Diana gown is also beautiful, coming in both various fitmesh sizes, as well as versions to fit Maitreya, Belleza, Slink, eBody, and other female mesh bodies. It looks great with or without the flexiprims and optional stomach brooch, is materials enabled, and shimmers in a truly lovely way that these pictures cannot capture:

(The black pearl earrings and necklace are not included; they were a long-ago freebie from Dark Mouse, a store that is no longer on the grid. The black pumps are part of a freebie four-pack from Marquesse for Slink feet, available on the third floor of the excellent freebie store at Ajuda SL Brasil at this SLURL):

So, as you can see, you don’t need to spend a dime to look like a million bucks in Second Life!

Second Life Steals, Deals, and Freebies: !SOUL

The !SOUL Store

!SOUL was a freebie store which suddenly disappeared from the grid, but lo and behold, I have just today discovered that they have now set up shop in a skybox high above the newbie orientation centre called New Resident Island (here’s the SLURL).

As before, everything in the store—women’s clothing and footwear, hairstyles, even some system skins!—is completely free. Freebie fashionistas rejoice!! You will have to join the !SOUL group for free to pick up these items, and there is a group join panel in the store:

Please keep in mind that all clothing items use standard sizing (XS, S, M, L and XL), and also note that some of the free shoes include the feet (although they do include a HUD to tint the skin to match the rest of your body, it is still a bit of a laborious process).

Below, my avatar is wearing the Lily hairstyle from !SOUL, plus the Delicate Satin Mesh Dress in white (in comes in several other colours and floral patterns) with the included Delicate Flat Ankle Mesh Boots (I just alpha’ed out the feet and they fit perfectly):

The Lily hair comes with 14 different HUDs with twelve colours each, for a total of 168 different shades!

Here my avatar is wearing the Mesh Gown Dress, which comes in seven patterns as shown in the picture below. The hairstyle is also by !SOUL, and is called Bellflowers.

Finally, we have the Mesh Long Pants and matching Mesh Frill Blouse, which comes in four different colours:

(The hair in this picture is Kelsa by Firelight Hair, a former Advent calendar gift, and the shoes are part of the freebie pack of Slink-compatible shoes available from Garbaggio on the SL Marketplace.)

Here’s the SLURL to !SOUL. Happy freebie shopping!

UPDATED! Second Life Steals, Deals, and Freebies: Le Fashion Whore

Le Fashion Whore should become a regular stop for freebie fashionistas!

You can join their store group for free, which allows you to win some lovely items of clothing from their 18 lucky boards. The letters turn over relatively quickly, and there is usually a small crowd gathered, so your chances of picking up something for free, without waiting a long time, are pretty good:

They also have a group gifts wall:

But the main reason I am telling you about Le Fashion Whore is that, if you act quickly, you can pick up not one, but two gift cards for the store!

I already wrote about the very generous L$1,000 gift card you can pick up as a free group gift until the end of January:

But, if you come down to the store today or tomorrow only, and click on the gift box at the birthday display next to the group gifts wall, you can pick up a second gift card worth L$1,990!

In a message posted on Saturday to her store group, the proprietor LeeLee says:

Hey Fashionistas!

It’s my 30th Birthday tomorrow!! OMG!

I am being showered with love and I want to show my Fashionistas some!

For today, tomorrow & Monday ONLY you can get a gift card loaded with 1990L (My birth year!)

Remember to wear your group tags and as before it is one card per avatar!!

Enjoy my birthday LOL!

Peace&&Love
Lee Lee

So, you get a total of L$2,990 in store credit to buy any merchandise in the store! Between the two gift cards, I picked up thirteen fatpacks of dresses, gowns, shirts, sweaters, and jumpsuits for absolutely free! The gift cards even work on the items on the sale wall, opposite the lucky boards.

Drop whatever you are doing and GET. DOWN. HERE. NOW!!! Here’s the SLURL to Le Fashion Whore.

UPDATE Jan. 20th, 2020: Well, LeeLee is learning why you shouldn’t give away L$2,990 in free store credit all at once! The sim where her store is located has been like this all day (and the highest was 81 avatars at one point!):

So, you can expect it to be crazy like this for the rest of the day, too. The sim has now been reset several times today, and LeeLee posted:

Due to the overload and people not listening we’ve shut the parcel down until Caspervend has a chance to breathe

The Store will be up again ASAP!

Thanks for your patience and sorry for the inconvenience

Second Life Steals, Deals, and Freebies: Beautiful Free Gowns from Poet’s Heart

One of the things that amazes me about Second Life is that, even after fourteen years of exploration, I still come across stores that I have never visited, or even heard about before.

And such is the case with Poet’s Heart, a store which specializes in full-length gowns (designed for Maitreya Lara mesh bodies only, although most of these gowns will also work with other models of mesh avatar bodies, like Altamura, if you make use of the alpha sections on the HUD that comes with the body).

You can join the Poet’s Heart group for free, and pick up some lovely free gowns and historical roleplay outfits from their group gift wall in-store:

Here my medieval roleplay avatar, Scarborough Fair, will model a few of these group gifts.

The Aerin gown in green has a clear elven influence, and it comes with a separate belt, overskirt, and sleeves that you can mix and match as you like:

The Happy Holidays 2019 gift from Poet’s Heart is the romantic Niniane gown with long, flowing sleeves, and a HUD with lots of options to change the colours and fabrics on various parts of the dress, including the trim:

Finally, this stunning silvery white ballgown is the Happy Holidays gift from 2017. This beautiful gown could easily be turned into a wedding dress with the right accessories:

In this final picture Scarborough Fair is wearing:

Mesh Head: Lulu Bento mesh head by Akeruka  (previous group gift; group costs L$150 to join)

Mesh Body: Maitreya Lara

Hair: Magdalen by LeLutka

Gown: Happy Holidays 2017 gown by Poet’s Heart (free group gift; group is free to join)

Jewelry: Antigone silver and diamond earrings and necklace (a long-ago free gift from Kouse’s Sanctum, a store which has now closed)

Shoes (not seen): Sonnet suede pumps by Hilly Haalan (free group gift; group is free to join)

Animation Override: The Gown AO by Kamilah Hauptmann (available for L$1,000 on the SL Marketplace, it is adjustable to accommodate various sizes of gowns, including bustle gowns and Mantua gowns)

Animated Fan: scripted geisha fan by Tuty (which I retextured with a white lace pattern; it randomly switches between five different fanning animations and is available for only L$50 on the SL Marketplace)
