UPDATED! How to Show Your Support for Ukraine in Second Life (Including the Latest in Free/L$1 Clothing for Your Avatar)

St. Andrew’s Orthodox Mission in Second Life (SLURL)

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you want to support Ukrainian-owned businesses in Second Life, here is an up-to-date spreadsheet of 28 such businesses where you can spend your Linden dollars to support Ukrainian content creators.

In addition to shopping at Ukrainian-owned SL businesses, there are a number of fundraising events which are taking place across the grid, with some or all of the proceeds going to support various legitimate Ukrainian charities. One such event is Love to Ukraine, running from March 5th to 19th, 2022 with all proceeds going to NBU (the National Bank of the Ukraine), Voices of Children, and the Ukrainian Red Cross. Another is run by Two Moons Gardens, which is donating the proceeds of their Inspiration Garden event to the International Red Cross for use in their care of refugees and victims of acts of war.

If you don’t have a lot of Linden dollars to spend, you can still show your support by picking up freebie and dollarbie outfits and accessories from various in-world stores, as well as on the Second Life Marketplace (I compiled a first list in this blogpost; this post is an update, with new items I have found since the first blogpost was published).

I decided to load up my main Second Life avatar, Vanity Fair, to model some of these fabulous fashion freebies. Let’s start off with this free cardigan, top, and long skirt set from Marvelous (it’s all one piece). Check out the daring slit on the skirt!

(There’s also a free women’s dress and a free men’s Chinese-style robe, both in the yellow and blue of the Ukrainian flag.)

Croquis is offering a free black women’s T-shirt with two designs:

TW is selling this black men’s polo shirt and matching pants for only one Linden dollar on the SL Marketplace (Meshbody Legacy and INITHIUM Kario sizes only):

Among the Ukraine-themed freebies is the We Stand with Ukraine free female T-shirt by Redangel (which is also available via their in-world store, as well as a matching men’s shirt; just click on the vendor panels on either side of the entrance):

Here’s a free Support Ukraine women’s tank top by Angel Fae Boutique:

There’s also this tied Stand With Ukraine T-shirt from Twisted Princess (L$1):

Here Vanity Fair is modeling the Stand with Ukraine dress by a store called @#1 (only L$1):

Lost Virtues is also giving away a free Stand With Ukraine dress if you visit their in-world store and join their group, called Lost Virtues Off Script by Kylie, for free (it’s also for sale for L$1 on the SL Marketplace). The dress is sized for Maitreya Lara mesh bodies only.

TinRoof Fashion is also giving away free men’s and women’s T-shirts in support of Ukraine on the SL Marketplace (or you can pick them up at the in-world store; just pay the vendor L$1 and it will automatically be refunded):

And there’s much, much more! In fact, there are over 170 free items supporting Ukraine on the Second Life Marketplace; just click here to see them all.

Finally, if you teleport to WENICE Meadows and Beaches sim (SLURL), you will automatically receive a folder with some protest signs with Bento hand holding poses which should work well with your AO, as well as some small and large Ukrainian flags, plus a few other items:

UPDATE March 18th, 2022: Salt & Pepper has just released a new, free gift, this beautiful peace choker, which comes with a HUD to change the metal to one of 6 textures, and the three inlays of the peace sign to any combination of 10 different colours, By default, when you unpack it, the inlays are set with the blue and yellow colours of the Ukrainian flag:

You can pick up this free gift at the Salt & Pepper store in-world (exact SLURL; no group needed), or via the SL Marketplace.

UPDATED! An Urgent Fundraiser for Timothy Jackson (Maxwell Graf in Second Life and Sansar)

I regret that I haven’t been blogging very much lately (I’ve been full-on occupied with training requests and other projects this September at my university), but I wanted to use my blog to amplify a plea for help from a virtual world friend, Timothy Jackson, whom many of you know better as Maxwell Graf, a talented content creator in both Second Life and Sansar. I interviewed Max back in 2017 about his work in Sansar. His Second Life store is called Rustica: in-world location; SL Marketplace).

Like so many who have had their lives upended because of the coronavirus pandemic, Tim/Max and his wife are in danger of losing their home, so they have started a GoFundMe page:

Tim/Max writes:

We just had an offer accepted this week on the mobile home you see in the picture, our lender approved it but today we found out our total costs to go into contract are about twice what we have in our savings account. We have not been able to find housing close enough to let [my wife] keep her job, renting or buying, until this one. We are so close to having some stability. We need your help desperately to be able to keep from becoming homeless again. Please fund us if you can.

If you can help them with a donation, no matter how small, to help them meet their GoFundMe goal of US$7,500, it would mean a stable roof over their heads. Or, if you prefer, perhaps you can purchase something for your virtual home in Second Life from Rustica, such as this amazingly detailed set of bookshelves and books:

I personally own this set, and I never fail to marvel over the workmanship, and smile at the clever titles on the spines of the individual books!

Thank you for your support.

UPDATE 1:25 p.m.: Jinkies, from the Second Life Syndicate blog, has also written about this fundraiser, saying:

I have known Maxwell Graff (Timothy Jackson) of Rustica for many years, in and out of SL.  Having known him and his wife Lyric, and all they have had to go through, I am hoping we can do our best to help them in their time of need.  They are at risk of becoming homeless as they wait to try and buy a house.  There is more to the story, which you can read on the GoFundMe page, but I will post a bit of it below.

What we are all hoping people can pitch in in any way they can, no matter how big or small.  There is the GoFundMe page for direct donations, the in world store location to buy his products, and the marketplace (it is not fully updated so some products are not listed).

Others are also helping get the word out, so know it is not just me.  Max is dear to many of us, so if you would like to see what some of the others have to say, you can check out blogs from  Ryan Schultz  and  Mona Eberhardt.

UPDATE Oct. 6th, 2021: I just wanted to let everybody know that Max/Tim and his wife met their goal, and have closed their GoFundMe page, posting the following message:

We have reached our goal, between this fund and donations to our PayPal, so [we] have locked accepting further donations, rather than continue to keep this open! We have what we needed, what we asked for, and more than we dared to hope. Thank you to all who shared, reposted, blogged, upvoted, linked, and most of all to those who donated. As of today we are legally in contract for the house and will be able to get this home. Your kindness and love have made every difference. WE ARE LIFTED BY OTHERS.

Congratulations to Tim/Max and thank you to all who contributed!

The Second Life Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society Opens Today!

Did you know that nearly US$4 million has been raised in Second Life for the American Cancer Society across the many in-world fundraising events, since they first started in 2005? It’s an impressive feat.

The 2020 Relay for Life fundraising event for the American Cancer Society opened today, June 6th, 2020.

This year’s Relay for Life track runs through dozens of specially-built and landscaped sims, decorated by various groups in Second Life! The entire route is lined with luminaria, which you can light in dedication to a loved one with a small donation.

Today, RFL teams are walking, running, or wheeling their way around the track to raise funds in the ongoing fight against cancer. Here’s a list of today’s events, including a list of all the themed laps.

For more information about Relay for Life in Second Life, you can visit their website, check out their wiki, or watch the following video. Strawberry Singh recently interviewed the organizers behind the massive Relay for Life event on her talk show, Lab Gab:

If you’re looking for a starting point, you can teleport to American Cancer Society Island to join the event this weekend!

Relay For Life of Second Life

Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event. The first Relay For Life of Second Life took place on Saturday, August 27th, and Sunday, August 28th, 2005. It was the brainchild of Jade Lily (who in real life was an airman called Keith Morris) and was reported in the The New York Times in an article called Letting your fingers do the running. The two-day event raised a total of US$5,000.

Since then, Relay for Life in Second Life has grown year by year into one of the largest celebrations in Second Life. In 2017, almost a thousand avatars raised US$230,000 for cancer research and treatment through a variety of in-world events and fundraisers. (Here’s an official SL wiki page which outlines the entire history of Relay for Life in SL.)

Here’s the main website for Relay for Life of SL. It includes a calendar of events and a leaderboard of the top teams and the top participants in the fundraising race.

If you can, please take part in the Relay for Life events taking place all across the grid this summer! Any kind of donation helps. Thank you!
