Second Life Steals, Deals, and Freebies: A Free Halloween Hunt at AsteroidBox

If you are still casting around for ideas for your Second Life Halloween outfit, might I suggest a Halloween hunt on now at AsteroidBox? The hunt is completely free, and you don’t have to join any group! I will show you each of the nine bloody hunt prizes, so you can decide for yourself if you want to do this hunt.

The avatar used in the pictures in this blogpost is a Bakes on Mesh-enabled combination of an Akeruka Cleo mesh head and an Altamura Juliet mesh body. (Both were free group gifts earlier this year.) I have found that most clothing designed for the Maitreya Lara mesh body fits the Altamura mesh body with a minimum of fuss.

If you have a recent Akeruka Bento mesh head like Cleo, you can hit the redelivery terminal in the lobby of the Akeruka store to get an updated version, which includes a separate Bakes on Mesh head in the package. Altamura has released a relay for use with Bakes on Mesh (it’s available to Altamura group members for free at this exact SLURL; the Altamura Design/Mesh Avatars group costs L$50 to join). You do have to buy and install the Omega system kit on the Juliet body before you can use the Bakes on Mesh relay (it’s for sale for L$99 at this exact SLURL).

The skin I am using on this avatar is by Atmoic Bambi, and is called Noori Noir. Unfortunately, the store is also no longer on the grid. This is an older system skin, so the area around the fingernails doesn’t quite match the Altamura mesh nails. I found that my earlier solution, the free finger and foot fixes available from League which I mentioned in this earlier blogpost, didn’t work for grey skin. To fix the area around the fingernails to match this deathly grey pallor exactly, I used nail covers by SmitCoStudios, which you can edit and tint any colour you wish (they are available for L$25 on the SL Marketplace).

The hair is the Pulled Back Bun (black) from the Library / Accessories / Hair Design Options / Pulled Back Bun folder in your existing Second Lofe inventory—free, adjustable, tintable, uncomplicated. The bloody skin tattoos came from a past Bloody Mess hunt at Fallen Gods, and I picked them up several years ago. (The bright red bloody forehead tattoo came from a different past hunt, along with a bloody blonde wig.)

Now that we’ve got the preliminaries out of the way, let’s get to the hunt! Here is the Carina laced corset paired with the Canopus boots:

The next outfit consists of the Selene shirt and Malus pants (the black pumps are part of a free sample pack of Slink-compatible shoes from Garbaggio, available on the SL Marketplace; Altamura mesh bodies have Slink-compatible feet). The blood-splattered Notos umbrella is also an AsteroidBox hunt prize! It comes with the pose shown here.

Here we have the bloody Theia glasses and the Auriga sweater:

And finally, we have something a little different: a couple of minidresses in black and red! These both look so good, so you could probably wear them for a non-Halloween night out.

This is the Powehi dress, which comes with a HUD to change the metal textures:

And finally we have the sexy Eridani dress:

Happy Halloween hunting! You can obtain the first hunt hint by clicking on the board at the entrance to the AsteroidBox store, shown in the first picture above. Each hunt prize comes with a hint for the next prize.

Vampire roleplay is a very popular pastime in Second Life, so today I decided to do a 15-minute makeover on a vampire avatar. Here’s the “Before” look, the now-familiar Iliana vampire avatar from SL’s Fantasy starter avatar collection:

Vampire Makeover Before Iliana 22 Sept 2018

And here’s the “After” look (please click on each picture to see it in a larger size):

This avatar is wearing:

Mesh Head, Vampire Teeth, and Facial AO: Maia Bento mesh head from Akeruka (this was a time-limited free group gift which is no longer available for free; the group join fee was L$150). More details here.

Mesh Body and Hands AO: Jenny Bento mesh body by Altamura (available for free at the Freebie Megastore at London City). I removed the included head to replace it with the Maia head. More details here.

Gown: Well of Souls gown by Silvan Moon Designs (free gift from the recent SL15B shopping event).

Shoes (Not Shown): Black flats by Garbaggio (part of the free sample pack for Slink feet; available on the SL Marketplace). Altamura mesh avatar bodies have Slink-compatible feet.

Jewelry: Daphne collar, earrings, and Bento ring by Beloved Jewelry (three free hunt items from the September Free Dove mini-hunt at the Beloved Jewelry mainstore). The included HUD gives a choice of 12 different metals and 33 different gemstones!

Body AO: Chubby Girl AO by [ImpEle] (free from the SL Marketplace). This is a nice, simple, calm AO with no crazy movements.

Hair: Que Bella in abyss black from Hairoin (a store which is unfortunately no longer in Second Life; I bought this many years ago and I forget what I paid for this)

TOTAL COST FOR THIS MAKEOVER (not including the hair): L$150 (the Akeruka group join fee)

UPDATED! Second Life Steals, Deals, and Freebies: Free Male and Female Mesh Full-Body Avatars from Altamura!

UPDATE Sept. 28th: For a current, up-to-date list of free or inexpensive options for mesh avatar heads and bodies for female Second Life avatars, please see this blogpost. For a current, up-to-date list of options for free and inexpensive male mesh avatar heads and bodies, please see this blogpost

Late last year, Altamura very generously gave the Jenny full-body mesh avatar as a free hunt prize in the Women Only Hunt, and the Robert full-body mesh avatar as a free hunt prize for the Men Only Hunt. Altamura has also given out free male (Max) and female (Valentina) mesh bodies at the freebie stores at Ajuda SL Brasil and Unihispana Crea. These are beautifully designed mesh avatar bodies, equal in quality to the much pricier versions available.

Well, the Men Only Hunt and Women Only Hunt are on once again, and this time around, there’s both a male mesh avatar head and body package (Tommy) and a female mesh avatar head and body package (Emanuelle) as FREE hunt prizes!

Altamura MOH and WOH Gifts 3 Aug 2018.png

To get the Tommy full-body mesh avatar, you have to find a black moustache. To get the Emanuelle full-body mesh avatar, you are looking for half a coconut. The hunt officially starts tomorrow, August 4th and runs until August 18th, but I was able to find both hunt prizes already today, Friday, August 3rd.

You don’t need to join a group to get the hunt prizes, but if you do get the Emanuelle female mesh avatar body, there’s also a free set of lipstick appliers, just for it. Just click the panel you see in the picture above the Emanuelle display (you’ll have to join the Altamura Design/Mesh Avatars group for L$50 to get the lipstick appliers).

As I have said before, I have found that clothing designed for the Maitreya Lara mesh avatar body fits the Altamura female body very well, with a minimum of fuss. Also, the Altamura female mesh bodies have Slink-compatible feet, so any shoe designed for Slink feet should work well (the female mesh body gift comes in three foot heights, selectable via HUD: flat, medium, and high). The bodies have Bento hands, and (in a nice touch) Altamura has included a hand AO which cycles natural hand positions, which you can use with your regular (non-Bento) AO. Both bodies also come with a facial AO.

Both Tommy and Emanuelle come with a HUD which allows you a complete set of alpha selections to make any clothes look good. However, you should know that, on the male Tommy avatar, you will not be able to remove the attached head to replace it with another head. However, on the female Emanuelle body, you can remove the head, eyelashes, teeth, and hair and use a different head with the body (like, say, that beautiful new Maia Bento mesh head you picked up for free from Akeruka). Also note that Omega skin appliers will not work with these hunt prize bodies. You are stuck with the single skin tone they have.

Here are a couple of shots of the Emanuelle mesh avatar body so you can see what it looks like (please click on each picture to see it full size):

Here’s the SLURL to take you to the new location of the Altamura store (note that the store has recently moved). If you haven’t bought a mesh avatar body yet because of the cost, this is your perfect opportunity to give it a try, for free! Happy hunting!
