Second Life Steals, Deals and Freebies: Belle Epoque Quarantine Hunt

News of yet another pandemic season deal in Second Life: vintage clothing retailer Belle Epoque is hosting a Quarantine Hunt, with 40 fabulous prizes for only L$10 each! You are searching for a doctor’s stethoscope as shown in the image below:

So I thought I would have Vanity Fair model eight of the hunt prizes for you.

First up is the red Eleanor 1950s-style dress (prize #9):

Second Life Steals, Deals, and Freebies: INSOL Skin Hunt

One of the pieces of advice that I give out to freebie shoppers in Second Life is that Christmas is the best season for freebies, the time of the year when many stores have Advent calendar gifts and other free items available. (Here’s a complete list of my best freebie hunting tips.)

Well, I am going to amend that advice somewhat and say that one of the best times to pick up fabulous freebies is pandemic season! I’ve already written about The Stay at Home Club, and many other stores on the grid are having “stay at home” promotions.

Among those stores is the INSOL skin and cosmetics store, which is having a Stay Home hunt. Eight tubes of skin applier are hidden all over the sim: in the store and the café, and in the surrounding beautifully landscaped sim. Each skin applier tube costs only L$1 to buy.

However, I must warn you that the tubes are very small and fiendishly well hidden! Also, the store owner discovered the hunt video Cat Pink put out for this hunt four days ago, and promptly moved all the prizes to new locations as a result, so you can’t use that to cheat! You’re going to have to use all the tools at your disposal to find those tiny tubes (here are my top six SL hunting tips to help you out). This is a hard hunt, so set aside an hour or two. I spent about an hour, and found only 3 tubes.

Four of the hunt prizes are skin appliers for Catwa heads, and four are skin appliers for Genus heads (which also work on the free Strong Face mesh head gift from Genus Project, yet another wonderful pandemic freebie that I would urge you pick up). Even better, Insol body appliers in matching skin tones are available for free in store (for Belleza, Maitreya, Slink, and Omega-compatible mesh bodies). Just click the round panel at the front of the store to receive the package of body skin appliers:

This is one of the hunt prizes, the Mila skin applier in the Milk skin tone for Genus heads (here I paired the free Genus Project Strong Face head with the Altamura Juliet body I picked up as a free Valentine’s Day group gift in 2019, using the free Omega skin applier):

Also, a warning: when you do find the tiny skin applier tubes hidden around the sim, just click on them, then pay the Linden dollar to receive your prize. DO NOT RIGHT CLICK AND BUY THEM. I accidentally did that for one hunt prize tube, and it cost me L$900! So please learn from my mistake.

Second Life Steals, Deals, and Freebies: A Free Bento Mesh Head for Male Avatars from Altamura in the Menstuff Hunt

I wanted to alert all you Second Life freebie fashionistas who read this blog that there is a free, fully-adjustable, Bakes-on-Mesh and Omega compatible, Bento male mesh head available as a hunt prize in the Menstuff hunt, which runs from Feb. 1st-28th, 2020. The head is called Akakor, and the free prize is hidden away somewhere in the Altamura store (you do not need to join any group to claim this gift). However, I do have some caveats about this freebie, as you will see.

Here is what the head looks like, wearing the included default shape without any adjustments to the sliders:

Note that there is a tattoo on both sides of the neck on the default skin that comes with the Akakor head, which is fully adjustable. (I’ll be getting back to those tattoos in a moment.)

Remember that all the freebie Altamura bodies do not allow you remove the head to replace it with this new free head. However, if you were lucky enough to pick up the fully-functional Romeo group gift from Altamura last Valentine’s Day, then you will be able to remove the head on that particular male mesh body, and use the Akakor head with it.

There is a Bakes on Mesh Omega applier included, as well as a HUD with some default facial animations, but there is no included HUD to add or remove the hair base, eyebrows, tattoos, or any other features on this head.

Even more perplexing, I encountered a couple of problems. First, one of my alts was unable to obtain the hunt prize, giving me the error message that I didn’t have enough money in my account (the head is priced at L$0). It wouldn’t work until I transferred L$20 to that particular avatar’s account, even though the head was free, and I was not charged for it at all! Something weird is going on.

Second, what the exceedingly poor documentation included with this gift head fails to tell you is that you must purchase and apply the Altamura Omega system kit (available for L$99 at this exact SLURL), in order to apply either Omega skins or Bakes on Mesh skins to this free head.

However, you should know that applying an Omega skin does not automatically clear the tattoo on both sides of the neck. You will need to remove the default tattoos on this head using one of the free Omega makeup-removal HUDs available on the SL Marketplace (such as this free NEFA Clear All Layers Omega HUD).

Why Altamura didn’t think to include all this information in in the package is beyond me. It’s extremely irritating.

In short, after spending a very frustrating couple of hours tearing my hair out trying to get this head to work with various Bakes on Mesh and Omega skin appliers, I must warn you that there is a steep learning curve with this head. I’m really not sure it’s worth the hassle, especially for newbies that this freebie might especially appeal to.

Here is what the Delphinus Bakes on Mesh skin applier (included in the package) looks like on the Akakor head, after removing the neck tattoos using the NEFA HUD I mentioned above, and paired with the **SD** Raphael Bakes on Mesh body available here on the SL Marketplace for L$1:

So, if you still want to try it out for yourself, here is what you are looking for in the Altamura store (with a warning that the hunt item is rather small and tucked away in a corner):

Second Life Steals, Deals, and Freebies: The Snow Queen Enchantment Event and Hunt

Each round of the Enchantment shopping event in Second Life is based on a theme from a fairy tale or fantasy, and this time around, the theme is the Snow Queen! There’s also a Snow Queen hunt with free hunt gifts.

In this picture I show you the Pearl Crystal ballgown by Petite Mort, one of the vendors participating in the Enchantment event (SLURL). In addition to the pearl colour shown, it comes in blush pink, periwinkle blue, and black, at only L$230 per colour:

In addition to this stunning ballgown, my Snow Queen avatar is wearing three free prizes from the Enchantment Snow Queen Hunt:

  • The Snow Coronet crown by Spyralle (with snowflake particle effects you can turn on and off by clicking on it);
  • Frostelle snowflake earrings by MOEKO (with a HUD to change them to one of six different colours, including the icy blue shown here);
  • The Ice Crystal Swirl surrounding her is the hunt prize from Attitude is an Artform
