You Better Work! A Comprehensive Guide to Jobs in Second Life for Newbies

Sylvannas Zulaman has just posted a wonderfully detailed introductory guide for those new to Second Life, about how to get a job to earn some money. (And yes, there is no free money. Girl, you betta work!)

Here’s the link to her post in the official Second Life user forums. I think it’s a wonderful service to SL’s userbase. (I added my own comment about how to meet the requirement of many public-service type jobs such as host, DJ, customer service rep, stripper, escort, etc. for a modern mesh avatar without spending a fortune.)

  1. I defintely wouldn’t recommend anyone doing escorting in SL unless you’re both secure in yourself mentally *and* able to stand up to online abuse.

I’ve been DJ-ing on-off for several years, and it can be rewarding, but very much depends on when and where you’re playing and how many people show up. It did help me get a slot on Gorean Whip Radio, however, which doesn’t pay but is much more fun. (Wednesdays 12-2pm, if you’re curious to hear what a blue rainbow-speckled alien sounds like… *wink*)

At some point this year, I’m looking to learn how to make skins and tattoos plus mesh clothing, primarily for myself, but I might end up putting stuff on the Marketplace if I think others might like it.

Ultimately, though, I use my own money to pay for my land plus DJ stream and other expenses in SL, and if I earn any extra in-world that can go towards (occasional) retail therapy. 🙂

    1. Oh yes, I remember Gorean Whip Radio! I listened to it for the first time when I visited a Gorean sim a couple of years ago and the whole concept just blew me away. Talk about a niche market 😉
