Second Life Steals, Deals, and Freebies: The Phantom of the Opera Hunt

The Phantom of the Opera shopping event starts today (November 14th, 2020 at noon Second Life/Pacific Time) and runs until December 7th, 2020. As part of the event, there is a Phantom of the Opera Hunt, where you are searching for red, long-stemmed roses in participating stores. The hunt is free and, as you might expect, most of the wonderful prizes are strongly evocative of the smash Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. There’s just no way that I could not start doing this hunt immediately! The theme song alone just sends shivers up my spine (see video at the bottom of this blogpost).

Second Life – FREE is a little-known-about Russian-language group on Vkontakte, the Russian version of Facebook, which often lists items I don’t see on other Second Life freebie blogs. They have helpfully compiled pictures of the hunt items. There’s also a website with hunt hints, which states:

The hunt starts at the entrance to Enchantment. Simply click the hunt prim example by the Phantom of the Opera Hunt sign to receive your landmark to your first destination. You’ll be looking for a Rose in each of the stores you visit! The landmark to the next location will be located in the folder along with your prize. Hints can be found at each store by clicking the example on the hunt sign, alternatively you can use this page for hints.

Near the spawn point are two alcoves where you can view the entries of a photo contest (and really, what better place to recreate the surreal world of the Phantom of the Opera than in Second Life?). I want the gowns used in some of these photos!

Here Vanity Fair models a number of the hunt prizes. She is wearing six of them in this picture:

Second Life Steals, Deals, and Freebies: The MIIX Tequila Hunt

Time to snatch up some completely free bedroom wear for both men and women!

The monthly MIIX shopping event always has a free hunt of items made by FurtaCor (you do need to join the Hype Events News and Offers group for free to pick up these prizes). This time around, in the Tequila Hunt, you are looking for doughnuts hidden all around the event. Look up and down, hunt all over, check all the vendor booths!

Here’s what some of the female prizes look like in the Tequila Hunt. The lacy lingerie and the bathrobe are separate hunt prizes, which come in four colours each: red, blue, purple, and black. The women’s slippers come in versions for Maitreya, Belleza, and Slink mesh feet, in pink, red, white, and black.

The lingerie and robe come in sizes to fit the following brands of female mesh bodies: Maitreya Lara, Belleza Freya, Belleza Isis, Slink Hourglass, and Classic/TMP by Meshbody. Of course, the Kalhene Anya and Lucybody Atenea mesh bodies are 99% Maitreya Lara-compatible, so this outfit will work on them as well (wear the Maitreya slippers with Anya and the Slink ones with Atenea). And if you have a free or paid-for Altamura mesh body, you will be very pleased to know that, despite the panties not fitting perfectly at the back, the robe covers that area completely, so yes, you can wear this outfit with an Altamura body, too!

Here’s what a few of the men’s hunt prizes look like. The towel and coffee mug both come with Bento poses (I tested them on a female avatar, but they appear to be sized for male avatars). The “kisses” boxer shorts come in five colours: white, black, blue, red and turquoise. The male slippers are unrigged, and come in two versions: white and black as shown, or red and green. (There’s also a system/Bakes on Mesh tattoo if you want red lipstick kisses all over your body, too 😉 )

The boxer shorts come in sizes to fit the following popular brands of male mesh bodies: Belleza Jake, Signature Gianni, Signature Geralt, Slink, and the Meshbody Legacy body.

Second Life Steals, Deals, and Freebies: Free Subscriber Gifts and a Free Hunt at Mangula

Mangula is a Venezuelan womenswear store in Second Life (SLURL) which is well-known for its detailed, high-quality original mesh clothing and footwear.

Did you know that, at the moment, you can pick up well over 40 different pieces of clothing and footwear for free in their in-store hunt? You are looking for black gift-wrapped packages lying on the floor of the store.

In order to snap up these gifts, you first need to do one thing: click on the subscriber group sign located behind the front desk of the store, opposite the entrance. This action will add you to the Mangula subscriber group. Mangula used to charge L$100 to join their subscriber group (as I wrote before), but recently they have decided to drop the fee, and it is now free to join!

Also, the Mangula subscriber group does not take up one of your limited Second Life group slots. For example, as an avid freebie fashionista with a Premium account, Vanity Fair is constantly having to leave and rejoin fashion groups to stay within her limit of 72 groups. I would gladly pay for an account upgrade which includes a higher number of groups!

Don’t forget that, in addition to all the hunt boxes, there is also a very generous selection of free subscriber gifts you can pick up. In almost all cases, these subscriber gifts are full clothing and footwear fatpacks, not just a single colour! I have noticed that Mangula tends to rotate the items on the Subscriber Gifts wall in-store, so you might want to drop by every couple of months just to see what’s new.

Anyway, here I show you just a few of the gifts I picked up from the hunt. Most gift boxes contain three or four items of apparel which can be combined or layered in various ways to give you several different outfit options. Please note that Magnula apparel only comes in sizes to fit Maitreya Lara, Belleza Freya, Slink Hourglass, and Meshbody Legacy mesh bodies, plus a fit called “Curvy”, which I assume is for the eBody Curvy mesh body (although I could be wrong).

The Olivia dress in red comes in versions with out without sleeves, plus an optional tooled leather belt:

The Paula outfit consists of a gray turtleneck knit dress with a wide leather belt, and a separate, loose denim jacket to wear over it for those cooler days in SL!

This Leila set is a lovely, simple white minidress with a separate black demin jacket (there’s also a longer, mustard-coloured dress in the hunt gift box):

The Zoe set combines a soft pink top (with detachable sleeves), with faded blue denim capri pants:

There are also many, many other hunt gifts, including footwear; in fact, there are several full fatpacks of shoes and boots to be found in the gift boxes!

I am a big fan of Mangula avatar fashion, and I admire their generosity with the large number of freebies they give away to promote their brand. Given the ongoing economic crisis in Venezuela, I’m sure it can’t be easy to make ends meet! So if you can, please consider spending some Linden dollars while you’re already in the store, to support the owner. Second Life might be his or her economic lifeline!

In fact, the only possibly negative thing I can say about Mangula’s beautifully detailed apparel is that is sometimes increases your Avatar Rendering Complexity quite a bit! So, if you want your avatar to be seen by other avatars properly (as opposed to showing up like a “jelly doll” in their viewers), please keep this in mind.

I don’t know how long the Mangula hunt will last (or, for that matter, how long you can join their subscriber group for free!), so hurry down to vacuum up some fabulous freebies for your wardrobe.

Second Life Steals, Deals, and Freebies: the Jackalope Pride Hunt (Plus Free Pridewear for Men and Women from 28LA, and Free Gifts from the SL Pride Festival!)

To celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride, Jackalope is throwing a 50% off sale, and they are also holding a Pride Hunt. The hunt items are free and you do not need to join the Jackalope store group to get the individual hunt items, which all together make up a complete rainbow outfit!

Everything Vanity Fair is wearing in the pictures below—the fishnet crop top, skirt, badges, earrings, bracelet, the wonderful combat boots with rainbow socks, even the Bento pose and the backdrop!—is a hunt prize from the Jackalope Pride Hunt.

One of the free hunt prizes is this wonderful, colourful backdrop! The collection of balloons to the left and right are separate items and you could easily reuse them for other celebrations such as birthday parties:

Now, I should caution you that many of the hunt prizes are rather fiendishly hidden all around the store (including the ceiling!). If you get frustrated, here’s a pro hunt tip from Auntie Ryan 😉 …in the Firestorm viewer, if you press Ctrl-Shift-R, it will turn on wireframe mode (which is essentially X-ray vision). Press Ctrl-Shift-R again to toggle it back off. (If this feels like cheating to you, then don’t use this tip.)

This next Pridewear freebie is from a store called 28LA, and it is a doozy! Teleport to the store, and click on the rack of clothing outside, and you will receive a Pride collection of apparel, with designs for for both male and female avatars! The male clothing comes in sizes to fit Belleza Jake and Signature Gianni mesh bodies, and the female clothing is designed to fit the Belleza Freya, Slink Hourglass, and Maitreya Lara mesh bodies.

Finally, we have the Pride Festival in Second Life, which runs from June 24th to 28th. Most of the vendor booths at this event have free gifts (you will have to join the free Pride Festival group to get them). Here’s a look at three of the many gifts:
