Today I learned how to do M:N Segment Sewing in Marvelous Designer. (M:N Segment Sewing means that you can sew M (1 or more) edges to N (1 or more) edges in your pattern, and MD takes care of all the calculations for you.) I used this very useful tool to add hanging panels all around the hem of this crazy purple patchwork dress I created! I don’t think I’m going to sell too many of these, but I will put it up for free in the Sansar Store.
Here is Vanity Fair wearing the dress at Zen Garden:
I am slowly working my way through the CGElves beginners-level tutorials on Marvelous Designer, and I am getting better, little by little, at making clothing using MD! Today I made a simple woman’s dress, and textured it using a blue fabric with white polka dots:
I have decided to take down my first posted item, a very crudely made skirt which I can now improve on, so now I have a total of five items of clothing up for sale under my fashion label RSVF in the Sansar Store! I’m so excited!
I spent several hours this morning working in Marvelous Designer on some new garments for women for my RSVF fashion line. Today I was learning how to texture items, using textures that I found on Pixabay. All textures from Pixabay are covered under a CC0 Creative Commons licence; they are free for commercial use and no attribution is required, which is perfect for me as I work my way up the learning curve!
So I created another, shorter skirt this time, and selected a beige fabric for it:
And then I created this off-the-shoulder top and picked a pretty floral pattern for it:
And here is Vanity Fair in Ryan’s Garden, showing off her new wardrobe! Total cost for this outfit is S$5 (S$5 for the top and the skirt is free!).
This is the first blogpost in a new series that I’m calling Adventures in Virtual Fashion Design, where I will document my journey to becoming a full-fledged fashion designer in Sansar.
I have a subscription to the CGElves tutorials, and I have worked through the first two tutorials in their Marvelous Designer Intro and Beginners Course. And Debi Baskerville was kind enough to point me to a very useful beginner’s tutorial by Lori Griffiths:
Using the Lori Griffiths tutorial, I was able to create my first garment using Marvelous Designer, a very simple men’s top:
I uploaded my shirt (and a thumbnail image) to Sansar and here is my avatar wearing my new shirt in Lookbook. (I notice that the tiny measurement numbers appeared on this garment by accident. I still have to figure out how to remove those before I export.)
And here I am wearing the first thing that I ever made using Marvelous Designer, in my own experience Ryan’s Garden. I’m so proud of myself! All in all, it took me about three hours from start to finish.
UPDATE 1:31 p.m.: Using Lori’s tutorial I also made my very first article of women’s clothing, a very simple skirt. Here’s what it looks like:
Not bad for an absolute beginner, eh? I have decided to give this skirt away as a freebie on the Sansar Store, as the very first item in my RSVF line of clothing:
UPDATE Dec. 27th: I have decided to take the women’s skirt down off the Sansar Store after only a couple of days. I have learned more about how to use Marvelous Designer, and frankly, I can create a better-looking skirt now! So anyone who did buy this particular skirt, has bought a piece of RSVF fashion history! Maybe you can get it into a museum somewhere 😉
